An online funeral guestbook for memories and condolences
At a funeral or celebration of life, people want to say something to the family but rarely find the moment. An online guestbook gives them somewhere quiet to do it: a memory, a photo, a few words of condolence. It also gives the family something to keep and read again when they're ready.
Why families choose an online condolence book
A signing book by the door collects names. An online guestbook collects stories: the workmate who remembers a kindness, the cousin with a photo from a family holiday thirty years ago, the neighbour who can't travel to the service.
Nobody needs an account or an app. Guests scan a QR code at the service or open a link from anywhere in the world, and leave their message in their own time, during the wake or weeks later.
- Written memories, photos and short voice messages from anyone with the link
- A QR sign for the service, the wake or the memorial table
- A gentle display of messages and photos on a screen at the gathering, if the family wants one
- A keepsake PDF of every message, to print, share with family or keep
Setting it up, even at short notice
Funerals are arranged in days, not months. It takes a few minutes to set up from a phone, and someone close to the family, or the funeral director, can do it on their behalf.
- Create the guestbookName it for the person, for example "Remembering John Smith", and add the date of the service.
- Share the linkAdd it to the funeral notice, the order of service, the family group chat or a social media post.
- Put the QR at the servicePrint the QR sign and place it by the entrance, the memorial table or at the wake.
- Choose what's shownDisplay messages on a screen if you'd like, or keep them private for the family. Any message can be hidden.
- Keep the memoriesDownload the messages as a keepsake PDF. Paid plans also keep the photos and voice messages for a year or longer.
What to write in a funeral guestbook
Many people aren't sure what to say. A short prompt in the order of service helps. Some gentle starting points:
- How you knew them, and when you first met
- A memory that still makes you smile
- Something they said or did that stayed with you
- What you'd want the family to know about them
- A photo you have of them that the family may not have seen
- "Thinking of you all" is enough, too
What it costs
Setting up is free. A free guestbook keeps up to 10 messages and 50 photos for 14 days from when it's created, which suits a small, private service.
For most funerals, Keepsake (A$199) is the right fit: no limit on messages, up to 500 photos, full downloads of photos and voice messages, and 12 months online so people can keep adding memories after the service. Hosting then continues at A$29 a year, with an email reminder 30 days before, and you can cancel at any time.
Questions people ask
Is the guestbook private?
Yes. Only people with the link or the event code can open it. It isn't listed publicly, and the family can delete it at any time.
Can people who can't attend the funeral leave a message?
Yes. Share the link in the funeral notice or by message. People can leave condolences from anywhere, before or after the service.
Can we stop inappropriate or unwanted messages appearing?
Yes. You can hide or remove any message, and choose whether messages are shown on a screen at all.
Can a funeral director set it up for the family?
Yes. Anyone can create the guestbook and share the link. The person who creates it manages the messages and downloads.
How long do the memories stay online?
A free guestbook stays online for 14 days. Keepsake and Heirloom include 12 months, then renew at A$29 a year until you cancel. You can download everything before it closes.
