The Modern Etiquette of Plus-Ones

Guest lists are notoriously the hardest part of planning any large event. The dreaded 'plus-one' dilemma can cause serious friction if not handled consistently.

The Rule of Thumb

The standard modern etiquette is this: married couples, engaged couples, and individuals in long-term serious relationships should always be invited with their partners. Single friends do not strictly require a plus-one, unless they will not know anyone else at the event.

Be clear on the invitations. Address the envelope exactly to the people invited. If guests try to RSVP with uninvited dates, address it quickly and politely, citing venue capacity constraints.
